Album Press

Beautiful and tender as we have come to expect from the singer-songwriter, but with an underlying theme that is deeper, personal and reflective.”

- Red Line Roots

“Windsor's Dave Richardson makes folk music for the 21st century. While the singer-songwriter's catalog bears all the hallmarks of the genre, his style and candid writing transcend folk tropes.”

- Seven Days

“Richardson sings, “I really love you all and I’m going to keep trying.” Really, what more should any of us aspire toward? Even we curmudgeons happiest with our own company. Good album, Palms to Pines. Seek it out.”

- Fervor Coulee

Album Bio

I have been thinking about home, solitude, connection, and relationships. My need for space and to retreat, and my social anxiety can interfere with my desire to connect with others, share experiences, and be together. My songwriting has been reflecting these themes, and by late 2019 I had a collection of the most personal songs I’ve ever written. I shifted from solitude and introspection to connection and collaboration, and I called on some dear friends, some old, some new, to make an album.

Recording is magical. Taking little seedlings of ideas, nurturing them into songs, and then bringing them to other people who help them grow and blossom – it’s such a special and significant process, especially as a solo performer.

I assembled an amazing team of musicians and we gathered at Dimension Sound Studios in Boston, MA for six days in late March 2020. At that point in time, news of COVID-19 and its spread was intensifying daily. When we entered the studio Boston was open for business. By the time we left, the city had shut down. For that week, the small group of us gathered in the studio had one foot in the uncertainty and fear of the rising pandemic, and another foot in the comfort and security of being together playing music.

Everyone brought their creativity, style, and energy and poured them into these songs. I am so thankful for getting to work with all of these folks, and I cannot wait for the world to hear what we created. The all-star team consisted of:

  • Dan Cardinal – co-producer, engineer, mixing, mastering

  • Ariel Bernstein – drums

  • Emily Mure – vocals

  • Valerie Thompson – cello, vocals

  • Grace Ward – bass, vocals

After principal recording concluded, I worked remotely with two of my favorite singers, Lauren Balthrop and Emily Moran. Lauren and Emily were sheltering in place in Nashville and NYC, respectively, and they provided some truly magical harmonies for many of the songs.

Editing and mixing took place over the next several months. This process was fully virtual, with Dan and I passing audio files and notes back and forth via email. It was a slow but fruitful process, allowing me to sit with the songs and thoughtfully consider each decision that needed to be made.

The album mastering was fully funded by a generous grant from Club Passim’s Iguana Music Fund, which aids in New England-based artists’ career growth. Past recipients include Lake Street Dive and Della Mae.
